ExaWizards Partners with NTT Data to Develop a Data Utilization Service Using AI and a Medical Information Platform
Using the Millennial Medical Record and AI for Pharmaceutical Research and Development and Personalized Medicine

ExaWizards Inc., a company that develops AI-enabled services to solve social issues (hereafter, “ExaWizards”; headquarters: Minato-ku, Tokyo; Representative Director & President: Ko Ishiyama) has partnered with NTT Data (Koto-ku, Tokyo; Representative Director, President, and Chief Executive Officer: Yo Honma) to jointly develop a real-world medical data* utilization service using AI and the Millennial Medical Record medical information platform. The service is expected to start rolling out sometime in 2022.

*Real-world medical data: Medical data obtained through daily clinical services

ExaWizards has been active in the healthcare field, working with several pharmaceutical companies on promoting DX and AI development, as well as medical institutions, academia, and municipalities on initiatives utilizing AI and real-world medical data.
At the same time, since receiving government certification as Japan’s first enterprise certified for entrustment with handling medical and related information and anonymized medical data, as per the Act on Anonymized Medical Data That Are Meant to Contribute to Research and Development in the Medical Field enacted in 2018, NTT Data has been providing anonymized medical data for the Millennial Medical Record.
The Millennial Medical Record used for this project is a medical information platform that integrates electronic medical records, receipt information, DPC data, and other medical information at a national level, encompassing numerous facilities and regions. In collaboration with over 40 medical institutions today, it collects medical information on one million patients annually. Looking ahead, it aims to collect medical information on five million patients annually from 300 medical institutions.
The use of such real-world medical data from actual patients makes it possible to analyze the relationship between the onset of diseases and patient medical histories and test results, as well as the safety and efficacy of drug use. This information has the potential to aid pharmaceutical companies in researching and developing new drugs, and medical institutions in providing personalized medicine to patients.
However, advanced AI (machine learning, deep learning, natural language processing) and other cutting-edge technologies are needed to develop services that aid the selection of the optimal diagnosis/treatment for each individual patient based on data analysis that includes an enormous number of example symptoms and items, and to utilize medical information that has not been structured or standardized in any way by extracting and evaluating information pertaining to therapeutic effects included in electronic medical records.
This collaboration aims to combine ExaWizards’ AI technology and expertise in the medical field with NTT Data’s Millennial Medical Record to solve medical, industrial, and social issues facing Japan.

 ☑︎ Main areas of application
While potential areas of application are still being considered, at the moment both companies are looking to apply this service to the following.
*Analysis of disease and treatment status, and of the effects of treatment to aid the pharmaceutical industry in researching, developing, and observing the effects of innovative new medicinal drugs
*Analysis that aids in the early detection and diagnosis of illnesses, contributing to the provision of personalized medical care tailored to each patient

☑︎ Main initiatives
*Development of new AI-driven services using Millennial Medical Record data that can be used to understand the status of treatments, predict risks relating to the onset and exacerbation of diseases, and search for factors contributing to this
*Clarification of required functions and data handling pertaining to the use of Millennial Medical Record data by collaborating to distribute information to pharmaceutical companies and other customers
*Development and verification of AI technology for effective use of information that is difficult to handle and organize in a database, such as medical records entered in sentence form and medical image information to be expanded on in the future.

☑︎ Sharing of roles
In addition to making proposals to customers to expand the service, and joint sales activities and information distribution efforts, the two companies will split roles as follows.
ExaWizards
*Develop AI models and software as part of the joint development of the new service
*Provide AI and medical expertise in developing real-world medical data
NTT Data
*Provide anonymized medical information based on the Act on Anonymized Medical Data That Are Meant to Contribute to Research and Development in the Medical Field, and AI technical information owned by NTT Data
*Accumulate technical know-how on medical data development (data structurization and standardization, etc.)
*Provide support for the introduction and operation of peripheral business tasks and system modifications in association with the provision of the service

☑︎ Future developments
Looking ahead, we will look to test hypotheses using the knowledge and technologies possessed by both parties, further develop the service, and provide it in stages to our customers, the pharmaceutical companies.
