COREVERY, the Self-Learning System for Robots, Achieves an AI-based Automated Weighing System for Production Sites in the Powder Production Industry
—Launching trial installation in Tsumura, enhancing the efficiency of quality testing of herbal medicines

ExaWizards Inc., a company that develops AI-enabled services to solve social issues (Headquarters: Minato-ku, Tokyo; Representative Director & President: Ko Ishiyama; hereafter, “ExaWizards”), today announced that its “COREVERY”, which is a programming-free, self-learning system for robots, has achieved an AI-based automated weighing system for production sites in the powder production industry. Concurrently, ExaWizards has launched the trial installation of the system to enhance the efficiency of quality testing of herbal medicines at Tsumura & Co. (Headquarters: Minato-ku, Tokyo; President, Representative Director CEO: Terukazu Kato; hereafter, “Tsumura”).

☑︎ Automating weighing for various types of powders, enhancing efficiency by replacing simple tasks

To date, automation of the work of weighing a specific powder has required a separately developed, dedicated device. It has been a challenge for the powder manufacturing industry to automate the weighing of dozens of other types of powder with different characteristics that were handled in the production site.
In order to handle various types of powder, it is essential to provide some detailed manual handling tasks with an understanding of the characteristics of the powder. Such manual handling is simple, but time-consuming. An automated weighing system that can handle various types of powder would significantly improve the work efficiency.

ExaWizards has successfully developed an AI-based automated weighing system for production sites in the powder production industry based on “COREVERY”, its programming-free, self-learning system for robots. By having the robot learn the two motions of “scooping control” (estimating an appropriate position for scooping powder in a powder container and scooping a certain quantity (patent applied)) and “shaking off control” (shaking off the scooped powder to achieve the target weighing amount), it is now possible to weigh many types of powder with high accuracy and at the same speed as manual operation by a human operator.
To assist quality testing by Tsumura, which has struggled to enhance the efficiency of its quality testing of as many as 129 types of herbal medicines with diverse physical properties, the system will be introduced on a trial basis in the research and development department in FY2021, aiming for implementation in its production facilities for herbal medicines within FY2022.

[Outline of COREVERY]
“COREVERY” is a self-learning system for robots that enables users to make various robots learn and execute operations according to their usage conditions without requiring AI and programming knowledge. It can be used in various situations, such as replacing simple tasks or reproducing the actions of experts.

Application examples
1. Replacement of simple tasks (chemicals, pharmaceuticals, and cosmetics)
To replace simple tasks, such as keep shaking a test tube for blending

2. Inspection using a drone (checking and maintenance)
To detect rust or chipped cement in ridge beams, factories, and plants with a drone

3. Holding, cooking, and serving food items (food)
To hold, cook and serve food items including meat and fish that are not in uniform shapes

4. Replication of motion of experts (manufacturing)
To replicate experts’ motions, such as polishing and grinding, with robots

5. Replacement of work in hazardous environments (industrial waste disposal sites)
To automate work in hazardous environments, including processing large volumes of industrial waste with a crane

6. Cultivation and harvesting of farm products (food)
To attain ideal cultivation in consideration of the growing conditions of a crop, as a person does
