Exhibiting “exaBase Robotics” at the 2022 International Robot Exhibition The world’s first “pancake serving AI robot” that learns the serving sense of a Michelin star chef will be exhibited.
A high-speed AI picking robot that can be used in the food, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics and logistics industries will also be exhibited.
ExaWizards Inc., a company that develops artificial intelligence (AI)-enabled services to solve social issues (hereafter, “ExaWizards“; headquarters: Minato-ku, Tokyo; Representative Director & President: Ko Ishiyama), will exhibit “exaBase Robotics” at the 2022 International Robot Exhibition to be held at Tokyo Big Sight from Wednesday, March 9th to Saturday, 12th.
☑︎Reproduction of expert skills – Pancake serving AI robot
We will exhibit the world’s first AI pancake serving robot realized in collaboration with Chef Hajime Koto, who has won two Michelin stars. Using GAN (Generative Adversarial Networks), the robot learns the characteristics of the image data of the pancakes served by Chef Koto, and developed an AI model to judge whether the design is good or bad by mutually training the AI to generate a pseudo-pancake design and the AI to identify the design. The AI robot that has acquired the features of Chef Koto’s arrangement will demonstrate the best placement of pancakes and blueberries in a dedicated robot kitchen. Chef Koto is also scheduled to speak at the “exaBase Robotics” booth on Wednesday, March 9th, the first day of the event.
■Notable Points
AI learns the design sense of food arrangement, which can never be verbalized.
We have acquired a design generation model that captures the features of Chef Koto’s serving style.
Chef Hajime Koto
Representative and Executive Chef of HAJIME KOTO. Born in Hokkaido.
For a total of seven years at restaurants in France and Japan by French culinary master Alain Ducasse, he trained at “Michel Brass Toya Japon” and became an executive chef at the same time as the opening of “Dominique Bouchet Tokyo”. He became the youngest chef in the French cuisine industry (29 years old at the time) to receive two stars within four months of his appointment. In 2017, he established “HAJIME KOTO” as a brand of Haute Couture Restaurant Maison. As an executive chef, he creates meals for French and international maison brands by designing, branding, team building, and creating dishes that match each concept. He also works as a producer for chefs and creatives, creating environments and spaces where creatives can maximize their potential.
*GAN (Generative Adversarial Networks): A type of artificial intelligence algorithm that deepens the learning of input data by having two neural networks compete against each other.
☑︎AI Vision for fast recognition of irregular shaped objects – High Speed AI Picking Robot
At this event, AI Vision developed by ExaWizards will also be exhibited. AI vision enables high-speed recognition of irregular-shaped objects using a simulation data learning platform*. This platform reduces the workload of installing a new system and switching models in the food, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics and logistics field, where a wide variety of products and irregular shapes must be handled. The platform can be updated by users and partner companies for installation and additional learning with various robots.
In addition, on Wednesday, March 9th, ExaWizards AI Engineering Fellow Satoshi Asatani will speak at the seminar “The Future of Robots as Envisioned by exaBase Robotics,” where he will introduce the latest multimodal AI technology and techniques for visualizing and automating proficient skills using AI robots.
*Simulation data learning platform: A proprietary learning platform that generates and learns 3D-mesh data of objects and light source environments with simulation data to enable recognition of irregularly shaped objects with deformation and reflection. It is characterized by its ability to complete learning data generation, training, and verification in a few simple steps.

☑︎What is “exaBase Robotics” < https://exawizards.com/exabase/robotics/>
This is a robot AI solution that realizes automation and optimization of processes by utilizing various multimodal data, such as image data of objects, on-site equipment and robot control data, and simulator-generated data as AI for robots out of our AI platform called “exaBase.” This solution has been implemented in many sites, such as the automated weighing AI system for powder manufacturing sites at TSUMURA & CO and the automated robot AI system for visual inspection at Hitachi Metals, Ltd.
Use cases
1. Grasping of irregular shaped objects
Capable of grasping food with individual and inconsistent shapes such as vegetables and fish, and reflective and transparent objects
2. Powder weighing
High precision measurement of a wide variety of powders
3. Reproduction of skilled craftsman’s movements
Visualization of the movements of skilled operators in grinding, polishing, and heavy equipment operation, and automation by robots have been realized.
