20% of respondents use ChatGPT and other generative AI “daily” in their work, up 13 points in 4 months. Usage has taken root with company-wide introductions.
– According to a survey of 518 participants from 368 companies at a seminar sponsored by Keidanren, AI usage is progressing in the financial, public, medical, and retail sectors –
ExaWizards Inc. (Headquarters: Minato-ku, Tokyo; Representative Director & President: Makoto Haruta; hereafter, “ExaWizards”) conducted a survey on the use of generative AI at a seminar held on August 22, 2023, under the auspices of the Japan Business Federation(Keidanren). For the second time since the end of April this year, the number of participants who use generative AI on a daily basis in their business increased significantly by 13 points from the previous survey to 20%. The survey also found that use of AI is becoming more established among companies that have implemented it company-wide. In terms of industry, the survey also highlighted that use of the system is increasing in the finance/insurance, electric power/gas/transportation, medical/pharmaceutical, and wholesale/retail sectors.
ExaWizards provides services and products through the use of AI, aiming to improve productivity and solve social issues.
☑︎The survey classified the use of AI into five levels: “Daily use in business” from 7% to 20%, and “Occasional use” by a majority of respondents.
In conducting the survey, ExaWizards classified the use of generative AI such as ChatGPT into five levels: Level 1 (no interest), Level 2 (interest), Level 3 (trial use), Level 4 (occasional use), and Level 5 (daily use). Level 5 asked whether the participants were actually using the system by incorporating it into their work.
As a result, 20% of the respondents selected Level 5, “I incorporate it into my work and use it on a daily basis,” a significant increase from 7% in the previous survey. When Level 4 “I use it occasionally” is added, the total is approximately 60%, indicating a significant increase in the number of respondents who have started to use it compared to the previous survey of more than 30%. On the other hand, the number of respondents who “have not tried” Level 1 and Level 2 combined was just under 10%, a significant decrease from over 20% in the previous survey.
From the results of this survey, the volume zone, which accounts for 40% of the total, has shifted from Level 3 “use on a trial basis” to Level 4 “use occasionally. Since users in these tiers use the software on a daily basis in their work, there is a need to improve the utilization environment within the organization.
☑︎ Utilization Status by Industry – More than 90% of the financial sector will try it out themselves, with the manufacturing sector following closely behind.
In all industries, the percentage of Level 5s used on a daily basis generally increased. In particular, in the “Finance/Insurance” category, 22% of respondents selected Level 5, a significant increase from 4% in the previous survey. The “Manufacturing” category had the lowest percentage of Level 5 respondents (14%) among all industries. In “Construction” and “Electric power, Gas, Transportation, etc.,” where no Level 5 responses were received, the percentages increased significantly to 18% and 15%, respectively.
Wholesale/Retail” and “Medical/Pharmaceutical” were the industries that have made the most progress in actual utilization, with more than 70% of respondents selecting both Level 5 and Level 4.
☑︎ Targets of introduction – Company-wide introductions have a high percentage of daily use
This time, we also asked about the target of implementation. The survey also found that the percentage of Level 5 (daily use) was 31% for companies that had implemented company-wide, more than 10 percentage points higher than the percentage for companies that had implemented in specific departments (19%) or only for those who wanted to use it (15%). It is believed that the company-wide introduction of generative AI is facilitated by establishing a policy for its use and sharing best practices that emerge from each department.
☑︎ Utilization status by position – Over 50% of management level use it, and it is used for bounce ideas off of somebody, etc.
Looking at the results by position, the percentage of Level 5 employees (daily use) increased significantly to 27% from 9% in the previous survey. When combined with Level 4 (occasional use), two-thirds of employees use the system.
The management level, 56%, including both Level 5 and Level 4, increased from 28% in the previous survey. As with other positions, document creation is the most common use, but it is also used for generating ideas and wall-hopping. It is expected that as management’s understanding of the use of AI advances, it will be fully introduced throughout the company and applied to actual business operations.
☑︎Details of this survey and analysis – Shifting to “how to utilize,” the differences in applications by industry sector are clear.
The survey also asked about current and future uses of generative AI. The white paper, which can be downloaded at the URL below, provides details of this survey and analysis, including such information.
Specifically, the paper provides results and analysis of “What is necessary to use generative AI,” “Important points when introducing generative AI,” “Current and future uses of generative AI,” “Forms of introducing generative AI,” “Uses by industry and position,” etc.
These results highlight the fact that applications differ greatly from industry to industry and that the phase has shifted to “how to utilize” rather than “how to introduce” as a whole.
