Less than 10% of the respondents used ChatGPT and other generative AIs on a daily basis; More than 90% of the finance and insurance industry has used the system, while 30% of the manufacturing industry has not used it. ―ExaWizards conducted a questionnaire survey on the use of a generative AI to participants of its seminar supported by the Japan Business Federation to which 514 people from 274 companies responded―
ExaWizards Inc. (Minato-ku, Tokyo; Representative Director & President: Makoto Haruta; hereafter ExaWizards) conducted a questionnaire survey on usage status to participants of a seminar about the generative AI. On April 25, 2023 the Company hosted a seminar on the generative AI as supported by the Japan Business Federation where 514 people from 274 companies responded to the questionnaire. The survey showed that participants who used a generative AI in their daily business accounted for 7.2%, approaching almost 10%. The findings by industry brought this into relief that finance and insurance was advanced in daily usage whereas manufacturers still tended to wait and see.
☑︎ Usage status was classified into 5 levels: Using a generative AI in daily business accounted for 7.2%
In conducting the present survey, ExaWizards classified the use of generative AIs including ChatGPT into the following 5 levels: Level 1 (not interested); Level 2 (interested); Level 3 (gave it a try); Level 4 (using it occasionally); Level 5 (using it on a daily basis). For this last, we asked the participants if they actually used a generative AI in their daily business.
The survey resulted in Level 2: I am interested in a generative AI but haven’t tried it yet accounting for 21.6% and Level 3: I gave it a try but that’s all accounting for 43.0%. It became clear that the use of a generative AI did not take root for some 60% that formed a vast majority.
Level 4: I used it occasionally accounted for 25.9% and Level 5: I use a generative AI in my daily business accounted for 7.2%. The survey showed that advanced companies had begun to take advantage of generative AIs in their business.
☑︎ Usage status by industry: over 90% of the financial industry tried a generative AI on their own; while manufacturers were slow to implement it
The survey clearly showed that usage status differed considerably according to industries. Level 5: Using AI on a daily basis accounted for over 10% in specialized service (22.2%); service (13.6%); and IT/Web service (12.5%). Wholesale and retail was also above average(7.7%).It also showed the fact that manufacturing (2.8%), construction (0%), utility and transportation (0%) were behind in the full-scale use of a generative AI.
While more than 90% of the finance and insurance industry prominently fell in Levels 3-5. On the other hand, manufacturing was also highlighted as not being used by about 30% of the population.
☑︎ Background of use/non-use of generative AI by industry
The survey also looked into the background of the findings by industry:
- Specialized service: Consulting firms had a high percentage in this category and they used generative AIs in research and analysis
- Service:Many respondents used a generative AI to improve productivity rather than to start new business. Many of the participants were from human capital services who were very much interested in the impact of generative AIs on human capital skills.
- IT/Web services: They actively used generative AIs that were closely related to their solutions and services.
- Finance and Insurance: Leading financial institutions announced one after another that they used generative AIs, increasing the likelihood of more opportunities to use them.
- Wholesalers and retailers: Their use ratios were higher in new business and improved customer contacts: they might be considering using generative AIs to handle transaction data with customers.
- Manufacturers: They may have difficulties setting out a unified corporate policy to use generative AIs as they have various business sites and functions, ranging from headquarters through research & development to factories.
☑︎ Overview of the questionnaire survey
The current questionnaire survey was conducted to 514 people from 274 companies. Manufacturers accounted for the greatest numbers by industry, suggesting their keen interest in the implementation of AIs. DX departments accounted for the greatest numbers by department, followed by IT and Corporate Planning. The survey reflected that apart from these, other departments like Administration and Sales were also considering the use of generative AIs in broader business. Since the seminar was supported by the Keidanren, junior and senior managers accounted for 50% of the participants and management over 25%, the presence of whom was conspicuous.
ExaWizards has developed, as generative AI-related services, exaBase generative AI powered by GPT-4 (https://exawizards.com/archives/24304), an inexpensive ChatGPT environment with enhanced security and management for corporations and exaBase IR Assistant powered by ChatGPT (https://exawizards.com/archives/24220), dedicated to IR to support improved administrative productivity. Note that we used the generative AI service to create a first draft of the present questionnaire survey.
