ExaWizards and Japan Weather Association have started the joint development of a weather solution service using AI, aiming to solve social issues due to weather risks

a new demand prediction service utilizing weather data × AI –
ExaWizards Inc. (Minato-ku, Tokyo, Representative Director & President: Ko Ishiyama, hereafter “ExaWizards”) and Japan Weather Association, a general incorporated foundation (headquarters in Toshima-ku, Tokyo, Chairperson; Hiroki Ishikawa, hereafter “Japan Weather Association”) have started the joint development of a weather solution service utilizing AI and other appropriate technologies, aiming for industrial innovations and solving social issues related to the weather.
This solution service is being developed starting with predicting product demand for companies that wish to mitigate weather risks, which are intensifying. By combining weather data with various data in fields such as healthcare and disaster prevention in the future, ExaWizards will collaborate more closely with Japan Weather Association in the joint development to create an AI platform for weather data which can be used in diverse fields by many companies and individuals.
Background of the joint development
A number of extreme weather conditions have occurred recently including torrential rain, intense heat and warm winters due to global warming, and unpredicted record heavy snowfall. Such conditions are expected to increase in the future. As weather risks are estimated to affect one third of all industries, it has become increasingly important for companies to operate strategically in consideration of such risks. Also, as the weather may have an influence on many diseases, it is also important to take into consideration weather conditions for healthy daily life not only for companies but also for individuals in terms of quality of life. In today’s age where previously intractable complex issues can now be solved thanks to progress in new technologies such as AI, solutions to weather issues by using AI will have a great social impact.
Accordingly, by combining ExaWizards’ AI, other technologies, commercialization and service creation skills, with the data, analysis technologies and know-how related to weather of Japan Weather Association, we have started joint development of this new service.
Development of the demand prediction service using Weather Data × AI
As weather is fundamentally related to human behavior, it affects the operations of various types of companies such as manufacturing, wholesaling, retailing, distribution, restaurants, agriculture and amusement parks. Also, as the influence covers a wide range of processes such as marketing, sales, advertisement & promotion, procurement, production adjustment, supply and demand planning, logistics, inventory, and selling, many companies must plan their business and formulate strategies by appropriately using weather data.
Through the joint development by ExaWizards’ AI-based analytical capabilities using machine learning, deep learning, etc. and Japan Weather Association, which has been developing demand prediction as a business since FY 2017, a model for predicting demand more accurately than conventional ones will be developed. Corporate clients who utilize the new demand prediction service jointly developed by ExaWizards and Japan Weather Association will be able to reduce waste and opportunity costs and optimize their inventory management, thus leading to increased sales, more sophisticated and efficient operations, and higher productivity.
Expansion to healthcare
As ExaWizards aims to solve social issues using AI, we consider that social issues attributable to weather risks include the influence not only on disaster prevention and the economy but also aspects of the life and health of people. Preventive measures based on forecasts of weather conditions are important for healthy daily living under the recent extreme weather conditions. Through this joint development by ExaWizards and Japan Weather Association, we will collaborate more closely with companies and develop services for individual consumers to support people’s healthy life from the viewpoint of healthcare, aiming to improve people’s quality of life and realize a healthy society.
